Staining a deck in Brisbane

Brisbane UV and humidity are harder on deck coatings than almost anywhere else in the country. What you do before the tin opens decides how long it lasts.

Timber verandah boards with a fresh even coating

Strip the grey back

Weathered timber develops a layer of degraded surface fibre — that silver-grey look. It feels solid, but it is already separating from the sound timber underneath.

Coat over it and the stain bonds to a layer that is on its way off. Clean it back, whether with a deck cleaner, a sand, or both depending on how far gone it is.

Moisture is the deciding factor

This is where most Brisbane deck jobs fail. Timber that has been washed, or rained on, or is sitting over damp ground after a wet week, holds far more moisture than it looks like it does.

Coat wet timber and you trap that moisture under the film. It comes out as blistering and early failure. Give it several genuinely dry days, and more after a wash.

Pick your weather window

Avoid coating in the middle of a summer afternoon. Hot boards flash the coating off before it can penetrate, which leaves a surface film instead of a soaked-in finish.

Early morning or late afternoon, out of direct sun, with a couple of clear days behind it. In a Brisbane summer, that window is narrower than people plan for.

Thin coats, not thick ones

Stains and decking oils are designed to soak into the timber, not sit on it. Flooding them on leaves a film on the surface, and surface films on a deck peel.

Two thin coats will comfortably outlast one heavy one, and they look better as they age because they wear rather than flake.

Plan on re-coating

An exposed Brisbane deck will want attention every one to three years. A covered verandah goes considerably longer.

The good news is that a deck kept on a maintenance cycle only needs a clean and a fresh thin coat. A deck left until it is grey and splitting needs the whole preparation job again.
